Over 2.6 Million BGN Allocated to the Civil Sector: BFW Annual Report 2023
2023: The Year of Feminist Power Sharing
The Bulgarian Fund for Women (BFW) allocated over 2.6 million BGN to the civil society sector in Bulgaria in 2023. The grants, which doubled compared to 2022, were distributed to 45 organizations across the country through 66 direct grants.
The total budget of BFW for 2023 marked a 55% increase compared to 2022, reaching 3,712,543 BGN. Of this, 74% was directed toward providing financial resources and building the capacity of our partners across the country. Through their efforts, the supported organizations directly reached 23,862 people in 19 settlements and indirectly impacted over 1.2 million people.
Last year, BFW managed to mobilize a total of 5,718,510 BGN, which is 62% more than in 2022. This was made possible thanks to the support of 53 institutional, corporate, and individual donors who stood behind our cause. We extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of them!
Ninety-one percent of the allocated funds (43% more than in 2022) were designated for multi-year operational support through our Mission: Possible program – the only donor program in Bulgaria that provides unrestricted funds for the overall functioning of an organization. This includes team salaries, office rental, equipment purchases, and other essential expenses often overlooked by project funding, but critical to the survival of organizations.
The significant increase in the amount allocated for operational support, reaching BGN 2,439,957 in 2023, reflects our commitment to helping organizations become more adaptable and focus entirely on implementing their mission. It also enables them to plan strategically and long-term, because we understand that social change takes time.
