ABOUT GUERRILLA GIRLS
Founded in New York in 1985, Guerrilla Girls is an anonymous artistic group that emerged after an action protesting the policies of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The group highlights gender and racial inequality within the artistic community and society at large. Through posters, books, billboards, lectures, interviews, public appearances, and digital interventions, Guerrilla Girls expose discrimination, corruption, and conflicts of interest in the art world. The members remain anonymous, wearing gorilla masks and using pseudonyms of renowned female artists from history.
Guerrilla Girls: The Art of Behaving Badly
When: March 6 – June 8, 2025
Where: National Gallery / Kvadrat 500, St. Alexander Nevsky Square, 1 19th February Street
The retrospective The Art of Behaving Badly showcases the Guerrilla Girls’ most significant works, including the legendary 1989 poster „Do Women Have to Be Naked to Enter the Metropolitan Museum?“ This provocative piece pointed out that while less than 5% of artists in modern art were women, 85% of naked bodies depicted in artwork were female. The exhibition is part of the Bulgarian Fund for Women’s (BFJ) multi-year project The Fund for Women’s Artistic Projects.
